If you are a First Generation students

First-Generation is defined that neither parent or guardian has completed a four-year degree.

The Goulay group is committed to increasing participation of persons from socio-economically depressed areas in graduate level training in the scientific disciplines, with a focus on energy sciences. This goal is achieved by facilitating the exposure of first-generation college students from colleges in Appalachia to state-of-the-art scientific apparatus and mentoring them through research activities.

STEM major First-Gen students are encourage to contact Dr. Goulay for research opportunities in the laboratory. Research is possible throughout the semester for credit (CHEM497), through the RAP program, or through paid summer internship.

If you identify as LGBTQ+

The Group is committed to increasing the integration and retention of sexual and gender minorities into the STEM fields, specifically chemistry by creating Safe Zones in the chemistry department and increasing the awareness of chemistry faculty to LGBTQ+ issues. Destigmatizing LGBTQ+ issues and offering targeted mentoring to students will overall increase the retention of SGM students, in chemistry and generally in the STEM fields.

In addition, the LGBTQ Center at WVU offers inclusive programming and outreach initiatives for WVU students, faculty, staff, and broader community members.
